Narendra Modi unveils Statue of Unity.
PM Narendra Modi unveiled the statue of Unity on 31st October 2018 in Narmada District of Gujarat. It is the statue of Sardar Valllabh bhai Patel and is the tallest statue in the world with a height of 182 metres. It faces the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada near Rajpipla. It was designed by renowned Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar.
The total height of the structure is 249m (790 ft) with a base of 58m (190 ft) and statue of 182m (597 ft). the height of 182 was specifically chosen to match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assemnely.
The statue is divided into five zones out of which only three zones are accessible to the general public. It can withstand winds upto 130 kilometers per hour and earthquake measuring 6.5 on the richter scale.
It has recorded a footfall of 128000 people in the first 11days.
It has however received severe backlash and criticism in political, socio- economicl and environmental spheres. Various local tribals severely opposed the land acquisition for the development and tourism around the statue. Renowned activists like Medha patkar and Gladstone Dungdung have severely criticized the project.
