The 2018 Bollywood box office started on a high note with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat finally hitting the screens. January 2018 was all about Padmaavat's clean sweep.  The January box office scene would have been a whole lot different if the earlier scheduled films including Akshay Kumar's PadMan and Sidharth Malhotra's Aiyaary had released this month, but considering the issues Padmaavat had suffered by the Karni Sena, they politely made way for its solo release.

The movie first slated for release on 1st December 2017 but due to karni Sena’s vigorous protests the movie releases was postponed. But then the

releases date was announced as 25th January 2018. It has big star cast like Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. It movie budget is around 200 corer which is highest in any Bollywood movie and the movie screens counts are around 5000+ worldwide. Despite widespread protests by political fringe groups throughout the country, cinephiles are gathering to the theaters to give Padmaavat a watch. And the film’s box office figures are proof of its success.

Though Padmaavat had opened to a average response on January 25, a Thursday with Rs 19 crore, picked pace on Friday with a massive collection of Rs 32 crore. On its first Sunday, Padmaavat continued its winning streak and made Rs 31 crore. But the film’s numbers hugely dropped on Monday, the first working day since its release. All an all Padmaavat’s first week collection is 129 crore.

In international markets too, Padmaavat’s performance has been exceptional. Its Saturday collection in North America was reported to be the highest ever for a Hindi film. In Australia too, it has crossed the lifetime business of previous hits like Bajirao Mastani, Dilwale, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai.
